Bamboo, silicone, ceramic or enamel? How to choose the right children's tableware

Bambus, Silikon, Keramik oder Emaille? So wählt man das richtige Kindergeschirr

When it comes to children's tableware, we refused to compromise. No hidden plastic. No mixed materials. No fleeting trends.

Our choice: Enamel. ✨

But why enamel specifically? And what about all the other materials that are advertised as sustainable?

Comparison of different tableware materials: bamboo, silicone, ceramic and YIV enamel

The honest comparison

🌿 Bamboo – not as natural as it seems

Bamboo tableware sounds like pure nature. But many bamboo products contain melamine or synthetic resins as binders – so it's not truly plastic-free, even if it seems that way. These additives can leach out when heated and are anything but safe for children.

🧁 Silicone – made from petroleum

Silicone is often touted as a flexible, child-friendly alternative. However, it is made from petroleum, is not biodegradable, and can develop odors and discoloration over time. For us, it's not a material that fits into a truly sustainable future.

🍽 Ceramics – beautiful, but impractical

Ceramic is aesthetically pleasing and natural – no question. But it's heavy and fragile. For small children's hands, especially those just learning to eat independently, it's often not the ideal choice. One fall from the table – and that's it.

✨ Why enamel is the right choice

Enamel combines the best of all worlds:

  • 100% plastic-free – glass on steel, without compromise.
  • Natural & durable – a material that lasts for generations.
  • Tasteless and hygienic – no odors, no discoloration
  • Lightweight yet robust – perfect for children's hands
  • Timelessly beautiful – not a trend, but a classic.

Enamelware accompanies families for many years. It grows with them – from their first baby food to family breakfasts. And when it's no longer needed, it can be passed on, recycled, or simply cherished.

For us, sustainability means: products that last

Replace less. Preserve more. 🤍

That's why YIV uses enamelware – out of conviction. Because we believe that true sustainability shouldn't be trendy, but consistent. Because we want to create products that don't need to be replaced after one season. And because we believe that children deserve the best – without hidden compromises.

Frequently asked questions about enamel

Is enamelware really safe for children?

Yes, absolutely. Enamel consists of glass fused to steel – completely without plastic, BPA, or other harmful substances. The surface is tasteless, hygienic, and does not release any harmful substances.

Can enamel break?

Enamel is very robust, but not indestructible. In the event of a very hard impact, the glass layer can chip. However, the cookware remains usable – the steel core underneath is rust-free and food-safe.

How do I properly care for enamelware?

Enamel is easy to care for: simply clean with warm water and dish soap. Most enamel products are also dishwasher safe. Stubborn stains can be removed with baking soda or citric acid.

Is enamel heavier than plastic or silicone?

Enamel is slightly heavier than plastic or silicone, but significantly lighter than ceramic. The weight is easy for children to handle and gives the dishes a pleasant stability.

Why is enamel more sustainable than other materials?

Enamel lasts for decades, can be passed down through generations, and is 100% recyclable. Unlike plastic or silicone, it uses no petroleum, and unlike bamboo blends, it contains no hidden plastics.

Can I use enamel in the microwave?

No, enamel contains metal (steel) and should not be used in the microwave. However, enamel is perfectly suitable for the stovetop, oven, and for serving.
