Can I put enamel in the dishwasher? Is enamel dishwasher safe?

Yes, enamel is dishwasher safe. However, to preserve the glass protection on the surface for a long time, we recommend hand washing – this way your product will shine for many years to come. If using a dishwasher: select a gentle cycle and place items so they don't touch each other.

How do I remove discoloration from enamel? How do I get tea stains out of enamel?

Apply a baking soda paste (baking soda + water), let it sit for 15 minutes, then gently rub off. For tea stains, citric acid also helps. For limescale stains: wipe with vinegar water (1:1). Stubborn stains: soak for 30 minutes in warm soapy water. Particularly effective against tea tannins: The Oecoplan cleaning stone from Jumbo – together with a soft sponge, it effortlessly removes stubborn tea stains without damaging the enamel.

How do I properly care for enamelware? What should I not use on enamel?

Daily: Warm water, mild dish soap, soft cloth, dry thoroughly. Avoid: Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, extreme temperature fluctuations, harsh chemicals (bleach, chlorine). Hand washing extends the lifespan and maintains the glass shine optimally.

Is YIV enamel food safe certified?

Yes – all YIV products handmade by Riess in Austria are officially food safe certified according to EU standard EN 1388. The certificate can be viewed on the respective product page.

Which YIV products are food safe certified?

All products handmade by Riess in Austria are certified according to EU standard EN 1388. Products from other production facilities (e.g. Zauber, Halfpipe collection, bowls with rims, motif plates 26 cm) are not certified according to this standard but are also BPA-free and free of harmful substances.

Where is YIV enamel manufactured?

The majority of the YIV product range is handmade by Riess in Austria – one of Europe's oldest enamel manufacturers, active since 1550. Individual collections (Zauber, Halfpipe) are produced in Turkey. The origin is stated on each product page.


Material & Durability

Is enamel scratch-resistant? Can enamel scratch?

Enamel is cut and scratch-resistant with normal use. However, strong impacts or blows can cause chipping – this is typical for high-quality natural material made of glass on iron and is harmless.

How long does enamelware last? Is enamel durable?

With proper care, enamelware lasts a lifetime – often even for generations. Enamel is rust-free, colorfast, and timeless.

Can enamel chip? What happens if enamel chips?

Yes, enamel can chip due to drops, impacts, or extreme temperature shocks. Chipped on the outside: can continue to be used without problems. Chipped on the inside: replacement recommended, as the non-porous hygienic surface is damaged.

Is enamel a material with character?

Absolutely. Enamel is very durable and more shatterproof than porcelain or ceramic. A material with character – that only gets more beautiful with time.


Stovetop Types & Oven

Can I use enamel on induction? Is enamel suitable for induction?

Yes! YIV enamelware is suitable for induction. The steel core ensures optimal heat transfer on induction cooktops. Start with a low to medium setting and slowly increase the temperature.

What types of stovetops is enamel suitable for?

Enamel is suitable for all types of stovetops: induction, gas, electric, glass ceramic (Ceran), oven, grill & open fire. Caution: Handles get hot – always use oven mitts!

Can I use enamel in the oven? Is enamel oven-safe?

Yes! YIV products from Austria/Riess are oven-safe up to 220°C. Perfect for casseroles, bread, and gratins.

Can I use enamel for grilling? Is enamel suitable for grilling?

Yes! YIV products from Austria/Riess are suitable for grilling and heat-resistant.


Microwave, Freezing & Storage

Can enamel go in the microwave?

No! Enamel has a metal core (steel) and must never be put in the microwave. Even with short use, there is a risk of sparking, damage to the appliance, and the tableware.

Is enamel suitable for freezing? Can enamel go in the freezer?

Yes! Enamelware is freezer-safe, ideal for meal prep and baby food. Make sure not to fill liquids to the brim. YIV products from Austria/Riess are suitable for freezer → oven.

Can I store food in enamel in the refrigerator?

Enamel is perfect for storing in the refrigerator. The non-reactive, non-porous surface preserves flavor and is hygienic.


Transport & On the Go

Can I use enamel for transporting food? Is enamel suitable for picnics?

Absolutely! Enamel is durable and, with a suitable lid, seal, and strap, ideal for picnics, camping, or taking food with you.


Comparison with other materials

Which cookware is the healthiest? Is enamel healthier than Teflon?

Enamel and stainless steel are the healthiest options. Enamel also does not react with acidic foods and is taste-neutral.

Why shouldn't I buy a non-stick pan?

Non-stick pans have a limited lifespan (1-3 years), can release harmful fumes when overheated, are not scratch-resistant, and are not oven-safe. Enamel is the sustainable alternative.


Baby Dinnerware & Baby Food

From what age is enamelware suitable for babies?

From the start of complementary feeding (approx. 6 months). Enamel is free of harmful substances, nickel-free, BPA-free, and antibacterial. Our Austria/Riess products are additionally food safe certified according to EU standard EN 1388.

Is enamelware too heavy for small children's hands?

YIV children's products are specially adapted; a cup weighs only approx. 100g – light enough for small hands.

Can I freeze baby food in enamel?

At -18°C for approx. 2-3 months. Enamel is perfectly suited for freezing baby food.

How much does good enamel cookware cost? Is enamel worth it?

Enamel is in the mid-price segment, cheaper than premium stainless steel, and quickly pays for itself through its durability. Buy once – use for years. A sustainable investment.
